There's cable TV in the basement and in the cottage
There is an Apple TV in the basement. Be sure to sign out of any accounts before you leave!
Please do not purchase any on-demand videos or other services on the cable service
The air conditioning in the main house is controlled by thermostats in the main hallway, master bedroom, and larger guest room
The smaller guest room and 3rd floor "crows-nest" air conditioning is controlled by the thermostat in the larger guest room
The cottage air conditioning is controlled by a remote control unit on the wall
There's an extra window air conditioner on the third floor in case it's needed on hot days
The thermostats marked “Alarm” are not functional - they sense freezing temps during the winter
Please be sure to close all windows when you are not in the house. The Cape’s weather is extremely unpredictable and an amazing amount of water can come rather quickly!
Although Brewster is extremely safe, please lock the house when you are out
The side (office) door, back deck door, and 3rd floor “crows-nest” door are special weather-tight doors. To lock these, you must first pull upwards on the handle as far as it will go and then turn the bolt. This sets some extra bolts around the door frame to ensure that the wind and water stay out!
The tide in Cape Cod Bay is 10 feet, and over a mile of sand-flat is exposed at low-tide: please be careful that children do not wander out on their own!!!
The beach is private beginning from the sign posts at the edge of our property to the right of the beach stairs. There's a narrow public beach between our signs and the ones across from them to the East. If sunbathers are on our side of the signs, you may need to point out the signs to them. Technically, the public is not allowed to walk across the private beaches, even below the high-tide mark, but this is never actually enforced in Brewster! Also technically, people are allowed to fish or collect shellfish, but only below the high tide mark. For a fascinating history of private beach laws in MA read this: Footprints In the Sand
The breakwaters can be a bit treacherous and slippery, especially at high tide
Make sure children understand that they should stay away from the boats that are beached at low-tide – sometimes they beach balanced on their keel and can tip over to one side very easily!
There are beach chairs, sand toys, umbrellas, etc in the workbench room in the garage. Please put items back there so they don't blow around if the wind picks up! Please let the agents know if you need anything else.
There's another toilet next to the outdoor shower. If the door is locked you can enter through the workbench room in the garage. The normal key opens these doors.
There's a very old fashioned fire pit in the garden for making s'mores. Use barbecue charcoal ONLY, and be sure to cover the pit when not in use!!!
